At the beginning of the 20th Century this square was built in honor of the spanish general of swiss origins, Teodoro Reding von Biberegg.
Reding was responsible for setting the Porcuna Plan in motion, which, devised by Castaños, brought them to victory on that glorious day in 1808. In 2008, a bronze sculpture was inaugurated in honor of this prominent figure in the Battle of Bailén. The following text is engraved on the plate that accompanies the image.
“Sad Homeland, mourn incessantly
the untimely death of the famous
Teodoro Reding who gave his life
to save you in stormy times.
His body welcomes
and awaits the abundant manner
in which the victory of Bailén will be amplified,
extolling his virtues and memory”.
